Nat Geo Music TV

I was flipping thru tv channels when something caught my eye. An obviously ethno-techno music video, and on the upper left side of the screen it said Nat Geo TV. I knew I had the National Geographic channel, but Nat Geo Music?

And the video I saw turned out to be Joi's Asian Vibes.

Which was followed by Sandra Luna's Carrito Cartonero which almost made me dance a tango in my living room, awesome!

And guess what clip they're playing now? Pakistani sufi singer Abida Parveen's Tere Ishq Nachaya! Followed by Brazilian pagode singer Paulinho da Viola's Talisman. Too cool!!! :D

1. Om Namah Shivaya - Apache Indian (An Indo-Jamaican fusion classic gets re-released)

2. Walk Like An Egyptian - Hakim feat. Cleopatra (This 80s Bangles classic returns to its Egyptian roots by way of Ireland)

3. Carolina - Bucovina Club vs Taraf de Haidouks (The Balkan Gipsy troubadours get remixed, and end up sounding Shaggy-esque)

4. Seul A Seul - Nayanka Bell feat. Passi (Sweet, sexy zouk music from this year's must-have Afro-French-Caribbean compilation: Dis L'Heure 2 Zouk. A hit on Valentine's Day)

5. Gia (said mrad remix) - Despina Vandi (This sleeper hit from the longtime Greek pop diva was a hit in Ibiza last year, but the real gem is this remix by Lebanese DJ Said Mrad who turned it into an Arabesque house number complete with a stunning drop seconds into the song, guaranteed to give goosebumps!)

6. Madan (martin solveig's exotic disco mix) - Salif Keita (The lead track from Salif's Moffou album, his best in years, gets a clubland remix from France's current hottest DJ. Also watch for the Moffou Remix Album, out now in Europe and coming to the US in April)

7. Aisa Jadoo - Sunidhi Chauhan (The current Bollywood dancefloor hit and the most played song in Bombay discos, 'nuff said)

8. Marsoul Il Hob - Hasna (Bhangra meets Arabic house, produced by Said Mrad from this up and coming Lebanese vocaliste)

9. Nutridinha (kerri chandler remix) - Cesaria Evora (The Cape Verdian diva has never sounded this good to an Afro-house beat with Luzo-African mandolins in the background, awesome!!!)

10. Camina Y Ven - David Bisbal (Spanish pop sensation goes back to his flamenco roots; Ricky Martin ain't got nothin on this guy!)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a translation/lyrics for the song entitled Dandaro by Rona Hartner on the Gadjo Dilo soundtrack, its track #8. Its beautiful and provocative and I think she may be singing in her native Romanian tongue---but not sure.....I'd love to know what she's singing about!

Thanks!

favorite Spanish bands/artists?

well headed off to Barcelona on vacation soon. Sadly, Spain is one of the few countries about which I am very musically challenged! I know there are tons of Ojos de Brujos fans here, so wondering if folks can recommend other contemporary groups and soloists about which you also are enamored?

thanks so much!

Annual balkanian rroma dance workshop in Serbia

I inform you that another summer intensif rroma dance workshop will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in august 2008:

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.

* Prices :
World Music Club Nites In Your Area, Pt. 2

World music has been undergoing a resurgence in popularity in recent years, as evident by the release of many new recordings by world artists practically every month these days compared to five years ago. Many members of this tribe, especially those in North America, are busy putting together world music-themed club nites, coast to coast and around the world!

This thread is a continuation of one I started four years ago http://worldmusic.tribe.net/thread/2ad48732-c979-43d6-bc40-35848c481f82#4b1bbf95-4bd1-4487-bab0-82a27c0fb84f Basically, I started it so we could share info on the efforts of DJs and other individuals in promoting our fave musical genre in the club scene, which will hopefully encourage us to attend and show our support for some these events. As usual, one-off events can still be listed under Tribe listings; once again, this thread should focus more on reviews of regular world music club gigs in different localities.

Having started my last thread in Portland, OR, I return once again to XLR8R and Six Degrees Records present ATLAS - International Heat with DJs Anjali, The Incredible Kid, and E3 at Holocene http://www.anjaliandthekid.com/?page_id=10

Holocene is a lounge-dance club that plays host to the city's most diverse, multicultural, worldtronica club nite, ATLAS. I have had the pleasure of returning to this most original world/global beat-themed night on two occasions: the fourth anniversary edition last year as well as most recently this year.

The ATLAS residents pride themselves on not being pigeon-holed in their sonic selections, a characteristic that has become the trademark of this Portland club nite. The fourth-year anniversary celebration found DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid all dressed up--she in a resplendent vintage sari, a classic Air India flight attendant ensemble from the glory days of jet air travel in the 70s), and he in a airman flight suite who looked like he was about to take the audience on an excursion into world beat. DJ E3 also looked very elegant in his shalwar kameez. Musical highlights of the night included DJ Anjali dropping Shantel's Disko Partizani before launching into a Gitano Global set of Balkan tunes followed by a full-on ragga dancehall blowout. The Incredible Kid played a smashing bhangraton set including Bally Sagoo's Whiskey di Bottle and the latest sounds of the phenomenal genre known as reggaeton. E3 spun an eclectic global beat with everything from Bassnectar (Snake Charmer & Yo) to a reDesified mix of DJ H feat. Lehmber Hussainpuri's Ishq Brandy. Acting as hosts, Anjali and The Kid even had a huge tres leches cake to commemorate the occasion and feed the throngs of dancing people who had completely filled the two rooms of Holocene and were dancing (including yours truly) all up against the raised stage in the inside hall.

Fast forward a few months later into the new year and Atlas is still the place to be in Portland for the worldbeat fan on every second Saturday of the month. This time out, DJ E3 opened with a mini dubstep set followed by everything from hiphop rai (Clandestino by Rim-K feat. Mohamed Lamine & Sherene) to hiphop gnaoua (Fnaire's Yed El Henna). The Incredible Kid followed with an hour-long set of Balkan tunes and vintage meren-house and meren-rap mixed in with the latest reggaeton tunes in homage to the current musical passion and world music background of this maverick DJ. Anjali followed suit with a bhangra set showcasing the various fusions with electronic music and a touch of Asian Underground.

Something interesting happened during the Incredible Kid's second hour-long set. Apparently, there were a couple of people who were celebrating their birthdays. As a gift, he played a contemporay Bollywood set including his signature blend of a remix of the original version of the Bollydisco classic Jimmy Aaja with that of M.I.A's reimagined version. The birthday man in the crowd promptly rushed on top of the DJ stage to dance to the Bollywood and bhangra hits by the team of Anjali and The Kid--the scene looked like something straight out of a musical scene in a Bollywood film! Another special treat came in the form of witnessing the Americans on the dancefloor trying out their bhangra moves while the Punjabis on the dancefloor proceeded to dance to the Balkan tunes--world peace and unity achieved on the dancefloor of Atlas Pdx!

Four years ago, I had the pleasure of checking out Atlas in its first year. The world/global beat nightclub scene in Portland has expanded since then. Today, regular gigs also take place at venues such as the Crown Lounge hosted by DJ GlobalRuckus http://www.myspace.com/djglobalruckus (I had the pleasure of attending a post-event session following a March 4th Marching Band concert where GlobalRuckus played everything from MC Rai to balkanica and bhangra in a tag team set with DJ Joro of the famed Mehanata Bulgarian Bar in NYC) and the new revitalized Pi-rem http://www.pi-rem.com/ The unique place Atlas holds in the Portland music scene is as a pioneer of a truly international and global world beat clubnite, one that shows every sign of growth and expansion for many years to come.

Many members of this tribe, especially in North America, are busy putting together world music-themed club nites, from Vancouver to Miami.

I wanted to start this thread so we could share info on the efforts of djs and other individuals to promote our fave musical genre in the club scene, and hopefully attend and show our support for some these events. Of course, one-off events can still be listed under Tribe listings; this thread should focus more on reviews of regular world music club gigs in different localities.

I'm in Portland, OR, this weekend, hence my first post will be about the fortnightly event, XLR8R and Six Degrees Records present ATLAS - international beats with DJs Anjali, The Incredible Kid, and E3 at Holocene
www.sixdegreesrecords.com/tourd.../nights.asp

www.holocene.org/calendar.htm

Holocene is a resto-lounge-club that plays host to the city's most diverse, multicultural, worldtronica club nite, ATLAS. At 10:45 pm, the cover charge policy was in effect (a very affordable $5), and a decent crowd was lounging on the ample sofas and bar. Music heard was a nice mix of dancehall and UK garage, including a Sean Paul remix.

At 11:00, DJ Anjali was up and opened her set with two records by multicultural Danish-based rap trio Outlandish, Walou and Guantanamo, both in their bhangra remixes, which set the tone for the evening. A Natacha Atlas track followed, after which she launched into a full two-hour bhangra-infused set, an admirable feat, considering the very much underground status of Asian electronica in the US. Heard that night were classics such as Bally Sagoo's remix of Mera Laung Gawacha, and more recent hits such as Sukshinder Shinda feat. MC Cheshire Cat's Gal Sunja. By midnite, the dancefloor was packed with revelers who continued to stream in.

It was a very eclectic and friendly crowd, certainly the most diverse I have seen in Pdx in the 48 hours since I've been there. Among the local djs who were in attendance was DJ Harmony, who gave me the low down on her own Sunday event at Holocene, DIVA.

At 1:00 am, special guest DJ S-Dub (we recognized him from his earlier set that evening) came back on the turntables, spinning world music-infused house: Afro, Brazilian, Caribbean, and Latin. Heard that nite were South African kwaito group Mafikizolo's Lotto, and MAW feat. soca diva Denise Belfon's Work!

At 2, DJ Anjali was back, opening and closing her last hour set with classic Bollywood, and the crowd danced till the lights were turned back on another great world music club nite in Portland.

And, what would a Six Degrees Records-approved club nite be without free cds? You're bound to walk away with music that are sure to be the world music classics of tomorrow.

Shantel - Bukovina from new Gypsy Groove CD

So I heard this tune on the radio and immediately had to purchase it (my first foray into Puntumayo as i'm usually not too keen on their releases).... why did i have to purchase it???? Because it is Sabres of Paridise's "Wilmot" done Roma style...yes really. So my question is this, in the liner notes it mentions nothing of Sabres - only that it is a traditional Calypso tune - yes it sounds Calypso - but on all the Sabre's versions it is credited to them. .. Whats the story here???
Its nearly a note for note take on "Wilmot", and given Shantel being a DJ during the 90s it would be impossible to think that he hadn't heard it. Anyways if anyone knows the real origin...please tell. Wilmot is an all time favorite and Shantel's version is awsome too!!!! By the way the whole Gypsy Groove disc is good - maybe i'll give other of their discs a go, ignoring the horrible album covers that turned me off originally.

As far as I can remember the master musicians of joujouka only little have been mentioned in this tribe. I would therefore highly recommend them.

Los Angeles recommendations

Hello,

I will be in LA next week and I am looking for international music shopping recommendations. I would love to find a good place to buy the fruit of LA's active Persian pop music scene. I would love to find a place with an enormous Latin selection. I would love to find a place to buy South Indian film soundtracks, Garifuna Punta Rock, Arabic music, Angolan music, Brazilian music, Jamaican music, etc. I realize that different ethnic communities are going to have their own shopping hubs, and I'm looking for any pointers as to where to find them.

I'd also be interested in any pointers leading me to good international DJs, clubs, and dance nights in LA as well.

Thank you all so much in advance for any assistance you can provide,

IK

If you haven't already, I heartily recommend checking out the offerings on Double Moon Records out of Istanbul. Not everything on the label is good, but the stuff that is is VERY good. Check out the Turkish blues group İSTANBUL BLUES KUMPANYASI, which melds styles you wouldn't have thought could be melded....and does so in a way that really cooks. Also, they have several traditional and hybrid recordings by Burhan Ocal, the world's greatest hand percussionist. In particular, check out "Groove Alla Turca", which pairs Ocal and other top-shelf Turkish musicians with NYC jazz veterans. Also, the album by the group "Orientation" is very good.

These CDs are a little hard to get, but are well worth the trouble.

Darker Mid-, Near- Eastern Music

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could provide some suggestions for some Mid-, Near- Eastern music. I draw toward darker artists, albums, moods much more than lighter; those that hold thunder and night in them. I seem to come across a lot of metal and neoclassical -not a great fan of either- when searching. Also, not too fond of new age or ambient, electronica or "worldbeat", most I've heard makes me cringe- too plastic and inauthentic- but I love Niyaz. I suppose like anything, if it is done well it transcends. So, traditional or modern(without too much sticky gloss). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks very much.

The New York Times hailed, “Onstage, Ojos de Brujo played as if musical energy could drive a revolution.” While the Los Angeles Times says, “Ojos de Brujo cooks up an organic blend from disparate elements - edgy scratching, syncopated hand-clapping, polyrhythmic Afro-Cuban and Middle Eastern percussion, scintillating acoustic guitar and hypnotic echoes of India… these skilled musicians don't just borrow from global musical currents. The currents run through them.”

After aggressively touring the globe in support of their Latin Grammy Award Winning studio album, Techarí (translates to “free”), they return with a new release capturing all the energy, excitement, and magic of their December 2006 live performance in Barcelona, Spain. Six Degrees Records is releasing Techarí Live, in North America as a 2-disc album featuring both the DVD and audio CD. Extras include a documentary, video diary, and music videos.

The professional audio CD and DVD features a handful of special guests including a throbbing horn section led by Carlos Sarduy, Martirio on a head-rush rendition of “Todo Tiende,” and Daara J MC Faada Freddy for a feisty version of Bob Marley's “Get Up Stand Up.” Ojos de Brujo’s signature flamenco dancers and stimulating AV graphics also add visual fireworks to the DVD. Throughout the performance is the sense of a collective who are restlessly nomadic in their search for new sounds, and genuinely delighted to share it with us.
Techarí Live is the perfect release for re-living an ODB concert or experiencing it for the first time.

Kumar arrives in Barcelona, makes magic with Brujos

The first time I heard this guy was on the wicked unreleased Ojos de Brujo track, Rompecadeñas, and one listen is all it takes to know the guy is a force of nature.

www.myspace.com/kumarmate

Check out the tracks Ke Te Importa and Pelicula, they both really show the direction this all is going.

It seems he's recently made his way to Barcelona from Havana and is really turning out something excellent. In lieu of fresh OdB (and there won't be much coming with Marina's baby in April...), this stuff really hits the spot, and reminds me a lot of the level of production in Techarí. That could be because there's several Brujos working on these tracks as, including Panko, Carlos, and Xavi Turull.

There's plenty more, but he's still waiting to get picked up by a label so some momentum would probably help us hear more of this in the next year... spread the word.

Un abrazo a todos!
Z

ps: a pretty nice feature here too

I'm really lovin’ the new Rasa album - Saffron Blue - it has a unique Euro-Indian sound. A nice meld of spiritual and sensual… with sitar, sarangi, violin, cello, rhythm and synthesizer.

Music is by Hans Christian and chants by Kim Water.

BIRDS 2008--Please Read, then Drum!!!

Respects...
You might see this letter cross-posted all over the place. I wish to reach the widest community possible and your understanding is appreciated. Should you know someone who might benefit from this information, please pass it along.

I apologize that it has been a while since I last wrote. This past BIRDS festival was a smashing success. Thanks to everyone who participated in making it a most memorable event.

There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for all to see. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen has informed me that he wishes to step down as president of the board, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

Aleichem Shalom…

Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - 10th Anniversary of the Passing of a Great World Musician

This year marks the 10th-year anniversary of the passing of the late, great Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Known as Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, or Emperor of Qawwals in Urdu, the master world musician left his earthly abode on August 16, 1997.

In a year sure to see many tributes to the late master of qawwali, let us remember the artist behind the voice that has truly broken many a musical, cultural, and political boundary in this world.

stuff to make with old strings?

Has anyone made anything out of their old strings? I'd love to hear/see some ideas! One of my friends took all his violin strings and had them knitted into a hat with some yarn... the strings boinged out of it in every direction. It was great... I'm looking for a picture.

I really loved the Bajofondo CD (oh darn, now I can't remember the exact name - Tango Club or something like that?) - I see there's a remix album, does anybody know it? is it worth getting? (haven't cared for any of the tango remixes I got a couple of years ago by other artists, so feeling wary) - no samples on Amazon

great new Turkish hybrid CD from Levent Yildirim

http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/7413754/a/Neverland+Fusion.htm

Some astonishing, and always fresh, Turkish hand-percussion (influenced not just by Turkish and Egyptian traditions but also, interestingly, by tabla technique), wih a crack band and top-shelf production....and hints of the electro-beat scattered through. A fine album that I highly recommend, even before you get to the creative and entertaining DVD (patterned after that old McCartney video where he appears as every member of the band, playing simultaneously). Plus, some close-up video footage showing Levent's blinding hand technique. Burhan Ocal, look out ! :-)

CeU...yet another wonderful new Brazilian singer

Just got the debut album, self-titled, from a wonderful new Braziliain singer name CeU. With a tremendous voice and killer musical instincts, this CD seduces and percolates its way into your brain. Modern, but with a fine Brazilian percussive soul intact, there is diversity and cohesiveness. Songs to dance to, songs for the bedroom (some are the same ones...), songs for the road. Highly recommended.
