Re: Latest World Dance Fusion Top 10
Mon, March 29, 2004 - 12:44 PMIn order of the tracks on the list, here's a list of the source compilations, their record labels, websites, major US retailers, and a personal rating based on 1-5 stars!
1. World Reggae www.putumayo.com (5-star. Any US retailer with a world music section should carry this release out on a major world music label)
2. Desert Roses vol. 3 www.ark21.com (4-star. Available at your favorite world music store)
3. Electric Gypsyland www.sixdegreesrecords.com (3-star. US release on April 6. Check w/your fave rec store)
4. Dis L'Heure 2 Zouk (5-star. Tower.com has apparently sold out their stock, so your best bet would be Amazon.com)
5. Chill Out In Paris vol.3 www.saidmrad.com (3-star. The only US release sadly is on this compilation)
6. Africanism vo. II www.martinsolveig.com (4-star. Afro-house mixed compilation. US release on March 30. Check under dance/electronica @ your fave retailer. The Salif Keita Moffou Remix album itself, out in the US on April 6, is more on a downtempo vein and does NOT contain the Martin Solveig remix)
7. From the Bollywood soundtrack www.khakeethemovie.com (3-star. Check with an Indian specialty retailer for soundtrack album or compilation cd)
8. Hasna (4-star. Borders Music should have this artist on their database. Its her eponymous release)
9. Club Sodade Remixes/Cesaria Evora (5-star. Everybody should carry this one!)
10. Buleria/David Bisbal (3-star. Check w/your fave music store under Spanish)
Happy listenin (and dancin!) -

Re: Latest World Dance Fusion Top 10
Tue, June 8, 2004 - 3:43 PMClub Sodade & Electric Gypsyland are quite delightful!!
Another compilation to check is Nu Europe which just came out 6/1/04. It features artists like Ojos De Brujo, Kristi Stassinopoulou (sp?),Boban Markovic, Manu Chao, Warsaw Village Band and others I've never heard of but are really good. -
-
Re: Latest World Dance Fusion Top 10
Tue, June 8, 2004 - 5:19 PMNu Europe is one of the latest in a string of brilliant releases from UK-based Manteca Records/Union Square Music. I would also recommend the Warsaw Village Band's People's Spring album. This is a truly genre-defying collection that brings these amazing talents into the world music/worldbeat fold. As you can see from my posts, I have more of a tendency towards world electronica, but these acoustic musicians blew my mind (plus the cd also contains a couple of surprising and delightful remixes!). -
-
Re: Latest World Dance Fusion Top 10
Thu, June 10, 2004 - 4:44 PMYep, I just picked up the Nu Tango as well. It's interesting too that labels like Narada, Harmonia Mundi and higher octive are now starting to shift their focus over to the world music genre. I just discovered Manteca and Piranha Music as well so I'm still a newbie with these two labels. P.S. there's nothing wrong with world electronica - it's actually easier to mix! -
-
Re: Latest World Dance Fusion Top 10
Thu, June 10, 2004 - 10:51 PMI do believe world music, in its various monikers such as worldbeat, world electronica, world traditional, etc., is presently undergoing a resurgence. Even pop/top 40 radio artists like you wouldn't believe are incorporating either Jamaican dancehall vibes or Middle Eastern strings! Which means we should be in for some eclectic and exciting aural experiences in the near future. :)

Re: Desert Rose compilations
Mon, October 31, 2005 - 9:43 AMI do like all three volumes of Desert Rose released so far. They were signature compilations from Mondo Melodia, in the same vein that the Groove series work for Putumayo and the Traveler series for Six Degrees.
I lament the fact that Mondo Melodia has not released any artist albums this past year. They were responsible for the US domestic releases of many Middle Eastern dance/Arabic pop artists such as Amr Diab, Ragheb Alama, Nawal Al Zoghby, Samira Said, and DJ Said Mrad. Not to mention the prices which hovered around a very affordable $9.99!
This year, I've had to order Amr Diab's Leyl W Nahary as an import from EMI Arabia and Said Mrad's 1001 Night Society direct from France at considerably higher expense :(

Thu, August 11, 2005 - 6:06 PMHola merhaba Kashmir! So glad you're enjoying Nitin Sawhney--that Philtre album is the best!!! Amazing fusions and vocalizations, even tho the import price for the cd is on the high side right now (why is nobody Stateside licensing all these amazing albums??) And what about that Daddy Yankee-Deevani duet huh?! Das rite, Mas Flow, Luny Tunes!!

Talk about reggaeton with Punjabi flava--I was trying to do the sandunga, but my shoulders started moving, and...uh...uh-ha...oh yeahhh...hariiiipppaaa! LOL
Y siga bailando balle balle! :D -

WEEEEEPAAAA!!!! -

Many of these popular styles have conquered the world music scene and won the hearts of worldbeatheads and dancers all over. Soukous did it in the 80s, bhangra in the 90s (and pre
