RACHID TAHA

The Rachid Taha gig was totally excellent on Monday night – the band was a fully monstrous rock’n’rai machine, relentlessly driven by a simple but monumental kit drum sound. Instrumental frontline of electric mandolute and Fender Stratocaster. No bass, but fat bottom from laptop/keyboard + heavily-amped hand-drum. Taha like a demented satyr, lurching and falling, getting in the face of his band, but no-one missed a beat. It was great. The audience was on their feet from the first song.

The Op Hse Theatre was not an ideal venue for this sort of gig, ceiling too high (for upper level seating) and seat-bound, not that it stopped anybody, but he made it his own.

Eno was in the audience (right in front of me – I was 8 rows in, just above head high) and Taha called him up on stage about ¾ in – didn’t add anything to the music, but crowd loved the gesture. Eno was involved with the Tekitoi disc 3 or 4 years ago, so they know each other. Strange for such a musically and politically tough-arsed gig, but he did his version of a Rai standard – all the Arabs in the audience (there were plenty + lots of Francophones) knew the words – he invited them up onstage. So the there was a stage full of Arabs, middle-aged matrons flaunting themselves to supercharged belly-dance, mad ululations at the chorus, and a few blokes had a go at singing verses in turn – several were really good.

Crunched the set with a totally colossal Rock el Casbah – then off. Crowd standing applause for 15 minutes. The house was supposed to shut down at 11pm, but Eno apparently did some emergency negotiating with the house, so back they came for two encores. Two hours of Taha – powerful, relentless, hypnotic. Fabulous.

Hakim Hamadouche was the mandolute player and excellent too, but pretty swamped in the mix except for feature pieces but it was Stephane Bertin's Stratocaster that was driving the rhythm – no lead, just inexorable industrial crank.

The warm-up band was a pretty good local Gypsy/world/folk outfit – Lolo Lovina was the singer, and pretty good voice too – technically very good players, but a few too many smart-arsed instrumental tricks and time signature changes for me.

Oh, and the Op Hse looked great with the evolving light motif. Cannot understand what the whingers are on about – they need to get a life.

Aniqua and I were also there in the fourth row from the front ... and right in front of Brain Eno ....

It was a complete blast and I loved every minute of it ....

It is so true "there is a little bit of Rachid in all of us" .....

Brian was SO generous and sweet and sang and danced with Rachid and half the audience at one point ....

I took about 100 photos and have culled them back to twenty which I will post of FB ....

    Rock the Casba!!! Voila Voila!!!

Hiya Cas, glad yu guys had a ball at the concert.

Sounds like the Rachid Taha experience alright. So glad I went to see him at Stern Grove SF last year.

Did I hear some rumbling about a new album coming out this year?

I hope you did hear that ....!

I haven't heard it .... but was only thinking yesterday that he sang some songs that I didnt think I had heard before ... or was that the woin?

One that I really loved, and one that I was trying to convince the tribe I went with that he was definately singing to me - as I was waggling my booty all alone directly in front of him at the time :P
He said it was an Arabic Love Song .... I have tried to find it but with no success ...

        Any ideas?

Well, if he performed an identical set to what he sang at Stern Grove, that "love song" would've come from one of his last two albums, particularly Diwan 2. Do you have it already?

Is that the song you were referring to?

If it is, then it's a slightly faster, livelier, live version of the Mohamed Mazouni-penned Ecoute-moi Camarade. Yu can sing along--I posted the lyrics on my post dated July 18 under this thread worldmusic.tribe.net/thread/...781e96be

And yes, the studio version is on his last album, Diwan 2.

No that is not the song ...& I have all the words as I have the CD's :)

I am truly unable to find it on Diwan 2 ....

Maybe I should buy 'the best of' and see if it is on there ...

He sang it solo and it was slow... and it was in Arabic and he said it was an Arabic Love Song but there were a few French words in there also ....

Maybe Aniqa will remember when she gets here ....

Did he sing it right after Ecoute-moi Camarade?

Cuz at the end of the video, I think he says something "love song," but I can't make out whether he actually mentions the song title.

Can yu ask the person who posted the YouTube if he has extra footage immediately following the one he posted?

True he does say that ....

But it was later after he had taken off his hat and thrown water all over us and himself and I have a close up pick of him at that time .... he looked so amazing with his hair wet and his black eyes .... he totally seduced my soul and he was completely lucid in that song and stood right at the front of the stage in the middle looking directly at me .... LOL

I'm baaaaack! I thought the words said it was an arabian love song, maybe that will make it easier to search for.

He was in his usual "state" and was very funny. Sometimes I feel like I'm watching a train wreck when I'm watching him. The coloured "water" gave it away - just a bit. He did the usual Rod Stewart thing with the mike, and missed it, again and did the water thing too. He just does what he does.

Just loved Barrrra Barrrra - that is such a great growl. We had a hoot of a time.

It's so reassuring to know there are still rock stars in the world - and ones as talented as M. Taha.........!!

Last summer in Central Park in the rain... i shall never forget the performance nor the involvement of the crowd. Before that it had been years since i saw him in France - but equally killer.

So good to hear it's a constant with him. Boundary-breaking music, crowd-killing performances. Pure inspiration.

Wish I'd seen all those shows.
I saw Rachid Taha at a World Music festival a few summers ago in the town next to mine, Vilanova. He was so wasted (drunk I imagine) he couldn't remember the words to the songs, couldn't sing or stand up for long.
A young Morrocan guy just on stage and finished one of the songs with the band. Folks came on and carried Taha off the stage. The band played one more song and then someone came on to apologetically say the concert was over.
I do really enjoy his music on cd. Maybe I'll have another chance to see him live.
