Got to say that Sydney's looking pretty good musically at the moment. March is an absolute feast with Yasmin Levy playing at the Sydney Opera House, Toumani Diabate there the following week and Vusi Mahlasela playing at Easter.

Also coming up is Thomas Mapfumo, Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Anoushka Shankar.

What more could a girl want (other than a healthy bank account to cover it all).

And just think, I saw Habib Koite play for 3,000 CFA recently - that's about $7 Australian. What a bargain, especially as the beer was only about A$2.

    Mmmm must return to Mali.

Ok so here ends the bragging - just for a while.

Thomas Mapfumo, Omar Faruk, and Anoushka coming into town? Yay for world music in Sydney! :D

And you guys must be gearing up for WOMADelaide 2008 with a stellar line-up as usual (this year featuring one of my fave artists--DJ Nickodemus of NYC's Turntables on The Hudson fame)

Just back from the Cheb i Sabbah Devotion album release event in SF over a musically busy lunar new year weekend in the city by the bay (full write-up to follow). Portland's next with another Devotion-themed event organized by the folks who did Tribal Matrix last year (my fave world fusion event) and Balkan Beat Box live in concert.

Thanks so much for sharing your personal experiences of Mali and the Festival in the Desert with us, Aniqa! Mali sounds like quite a world music hotspot. Will see if it manifests in my not so distant future, along with WOMADelaide, of course :)

        Jacques,
Get in touch with me while you are in Portland. I'm DJing the Balkan Beat Box/March Fourth Marching Band show and will be also hosting an after party. DJ Joro Boro (of Mehanata fame) will also be playing both. I turn 40 on the 4th so the whole weekend is going to be packed with craziness.
        Later.

Happy 40th Kurt, I already have your 4-0 prezzie ;)

I did hear you were DJing, so excited to see you with the March Fourth Marching Band--where da afterparty at? And of course, Joro Boro with BBB.

Speaking of Joro Boro, does anyone know which track he remixed for Slavic Soul Party? The SSP remixes are getting released this week, and other than the remixer credits, I am yet to see a tracklist identifying who reworked which track www.barbesrecords.com/SSPremixed.html

Will be in touch before tha bizzay weekend!

It looks like website hasn't been updated yet www.jaipurfestival.org/

You might wanna contact the organizers directly via email which is listed here www.jaipurfestival.org/contactus.html

The January festival which changed format this year into the Jaipur International Literature Festival (as opposed to two days at the end of the Jaipur Heritage Int'l Fest when I attended two years ago) apparently still included nightly musical performances by international artists the likes of Anoushka Shankar and Susheela Raman.

Sorry Cas only just saw this post. I'm not on tribe too much any more.

I didn't make it this year - only the second time I've missed it. After six weeks leave, I had buckley's of getting any more time off work.

I made up for it though by seeing Yasmin Levy, Toumani Diabate, Mamadou Diabate and Vusi Mahlasela in Sydney over the last two weeks.

Now looking forward to seeing Thomas Mapfumo in April.

I love Thomas Mapfumo's song Corruption which got included in soundtrack of a move (Bad Influence) in the early 90s.

Hey Aniqa and Cas, see you guys perhaps at WOMADelaide next year :)

Yeah right Jacques - you do know you've said that for the past three years!

I'm off to Mali again in early January to the festival in the desert again, followed by a bit more of travelling the country and finishing up is Segou for the festival on the Niger. Sad isn't it? tee hee.

If my work roster allows it (not to mention the bank balance) I will be there. Hopefully it will be a better line up than this year.

Very much looking forward to Thomas Mapfumo.

Yes'm, but yu see I am inching closer and closer Down Under as we speak :)

The moment of truth as usual for me is always when they release the line-up sometime in November. I literally know within seconds whether or not a particular set of artists beckon to me to attend a particular festie or not.

Glad to see yu got the bug to return to Mali again for the festival! Especially now that yer quite the veteran. I've got a friend who moved to Central Africa who wants me to do Fespaco out west with her next year. If I'm lucky, our paths might cross twice, Aniqa (twice, just like back to back concerts, is always nice :)

I just woke up from four hours sleep--it's an incredibly busy and kurrazay time at Miami Winter Music conference this year. Will post my notes on the impact of world music and global beat music on this year's fest asap ~*~

Hey Jacques, we'll just wait and see if you make it next year.

I've not heard any whispers on the line up but will let you know if I do. That's why I wasn't too concerned at missing out this year - not as good as it normally is.

Is there a website for the Fespaco (I've not heard of it before)? When is it, wonder if I can combine it and make it a three festival trip?

We are planning our trip now and it's making it feel much closer than it really is. Let me know if you will be around - would be good to meet up.

In the meantime I'll try and make do with Thomas Mapfumo next weekend and Horace Andy next month.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

<wonder if I can combine it and make it a three festival trip?>

Whatchoo mean three-festival, where else are you going besides a return trip to Festival in the Desert, Aniqa? :)

Fespaco's a twist--it's a film festival in Burkina Faso. The website can be elusive, but it's quite simple really www.fespaco.bf/

The great thing about WOMADelaide is it's right at the beginning of March. I got all of March reserved for Oz & NZ next year, but it is true, it is all about the lineup cuz that's what cinched the deal for Essaouira last year and Salmo this year.

Btw, I saw Nickodemus in Miami and he was very happy to have spun at WOMADelaide; kudos to the festival organizers for bringing in a North American-based artist and DJ.

The way I see it, Aniqa, we've got 7 months to manifest incredible line-ups and meet-ups for 2009! :D

I did find the FESPACO site. Shame it's at the end of Feb, but there's no way I can string the holiday out any longer. I'm really surprised that I'm getting as much time of as I am (we actually have a holiday ban over Nov-Feb but I'm special and they know it).

I'm also going to the Festival on the Niger Arts festival in Segou. Segou is a lovely town and from this year's program it looks great. We passed through on our way back to Bamako and so far it's my favourite town. They were preparing for the festival (end of Jan/first week of Feb) and it looked great.

So.....I will have to make do with six weeks tootleing around beautiful Mali again and visiting the festivals in Essakane and Segou. Burkina Faso will have to wait for another time. So many places to go and so little time to do it all in. I have to get to Tanzania soon or my friends are going to give up on me. But there is that festival on Zanzibar that is a little added incentive (as if it is required).

Friends in London are going to Essaouira this year and wanted me to join them, but there is no way I can do that as well.

Glad that Nickodemus enjoyed Adelaide. Sounds like he must like it hot! ;-)

Y'know, I was eating dinner and pondering which other festie you might be going to, and I realized you did mention Segou in your previous post! LOL ;D

It sounds absolutely fantastic, Aniqa--I'd give anything for six weeks in Mali! I'm booked up at the end of January and pretty much most of February, so there might still be a chance to do something early to mid Jan.

If you do go back to Tz, you really should hop over the water and get to Zanzi, the place is beyond beautiful and Sauti Za Busara really does bring together the best talents from the contemporary Swahili music scene.

I won't be able to make it back to Essaouira either this year. The last trip took three years in the making cinched again by an incredible line-up for the 10th anniversary edition. I haven't seen anything yet for this year. I met a whole bunch of folks from Europe and Germany last year, understandably cuz Morocco is only a few hours away making for a nice weekend getaway. It's like flying coast to coast, prolly even less, for them, unlike the halfway across the world expeditions we have to undertake. However, I am seriously considering returning next year :)

    • Trilok Gurtu live in Tilburg, Netherlands

      Tue, April 8, 2008 - 10:42 AM
here was last saturday playing Trilok Gurtu in Tilburg. He played in the new recently finished concert building. was wondering how many people came to Tilburg, because mostly if anything is playing outside the Randstad (the area between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht) its always hard to get the place full.
However it didnt obstruct Trilok Gurtu to play a nice 2 hour gig. The most of songs where of course lead by the percussion of Trilok himself he had a really nice band with an violin/organ/mouth organ player from Italy, an African bassplayer from the suburs of Paris, a German/Spanish guitarist and a female singer from Mumbai.
Exact 8.30pm the gig started after the band came up and plug in thier instruments, after that came Trilok on stage and recieve before he play any note a big applaus from the audience. after Trilok settle himself between his percussion he start playing his tabla and the rest of the band come they start play laidback song and direct next song follow with some amazing vocals from the female singer.
After this 2 songs Trilok use the break between the band to welcome everybody tonight in Tilburg and introduce directly the musicians he took with him for this show.
Halfway the show the songs goes more uptempo and Trilok improvise with his voice to say the boles of tabla while the rest of the band follow this riddim.
after this he take place in the front of the stage to play cajun while he joking with his Indian English accent about Mumbai and about the songs he play; that when people think i its a difficult song its easy and when people think its easy its a difficult song.
After few instrumental songs on the cajun he return back to his percussion drumkit and he start with an echoed microphone different sorts of hand percussion and create some great ambient vibes flowing.
He introduce after a while again the musicicans he took along for this gig and ask or we want hear another song and after a big loud applause he going back to his percussion kit. before he start with playing again he say everybody can sing this song and start singing "dha dha dha dha dha dha" and ask the audience and clap along. after a while everybody repeats the words that Trilok say and let the crowd saying this in a wave from left to right and from the back to the front.
After the gig is done look on my watch and see he played for a little 2 hours and time was flying.....

Awesome, Jurgen! Many thanks for the detailed account of Trilok Gurtu's show in Tilburg.

I am beginning to realize Tilburg is such a hotspot for world music in Holland--not only does Festival Mundial take place there, but world class musicians like Trilok Gurtu and Shantel and his Bucovina Club Orkestar make it a stop on their tour as well.

Btw, I spoke to Maga Bo in Miami and he said the vinyl for Archipelagoes are dropping later this month and the cd will be out next month!
        • Re: Trilok Gurtu live in Tilburg, Netherlands

          Tue, April 8, 2008 - 12:25 PM
Tilburg is a hotspot for world music because Mundial exchange is based in Tilburg and they start organize also gigs here last past years. Shantel's gig is cancelled twice already and now he is playing somewhere end of the year. Before we have Gogol Bordello playing here where i'm gonna hopefully meet up with Dimon.
Think to compare with some other cities where still a underdog position with seeing good world music, the most of the artists prefer to gigging in Amsterdam in venues like Paradiso or Melkweg.

Got from Maga bo his album last month as promo copy, the album is really amazing and play it for a week non stop :)
Now is in my cd player are:
Watcha Clan's album Diaspora Hi-Fi: A Mediterranean Caravan. This Marseille based band know as no other to mix sounds from the Mediterraean part of europe, Balkans and Northern Africa into amazing songs.
Indigenous Resistance featuring Dr Das, Ramjac, Mad Mike (Underground Resistance) and Kokonda Dub with 6 mixes of the Krikati track.
    • Gogol Bordello in Tilburg

      Fri, April 25, 2008 - 9:19 AM
went see this monday Gogol Bordello in Tilburg, they where again amazing full of energy they played an almost 2 hour set of all thier albums including a duet with Benji Webbe (from the Welsh ragga metal band Skindred).
Think skindred was the biggest suprise of the evening after i'm met them 8 years ago for a private gig in thier rehearsal room.

Did you see a guy in a wheelchair with a big head at the show? My friend Dave took a trip to Holland and was sure to catch that show. It sounded like he had a blast. Good lord I miss Holland.
