World music is currently undergoing a resurgence in popularity, as evident by the release of many new recordings by world artists in the Western hemisphere. Many members of this tribe, especially in North America, are busy putting together world music-themed club nites, from Vancouver to Miami.
I wanted to start this thread so we could share info on the efforts of djs and other individuals to promote our fave musical genre in the club scene, and hopefully attend and show our support for some these events. Of course, one-off events can still be listed under Tribe listings; this thread should focus more on reviews of regular world music club gigs in different localities.
I'm in Portland, OR, this weekend, hence my first post will be about the fortnightly event, XLR8R and Six Degrees Records present ATLAS - international beats with DJs Anjali, The Incredible Kid, and E3 at Holocene
www.sixdegreesrecords.com/tourd.....ghts.asp
www.holocene.org/calendar.htm
Holocene is a resto-lounge-club that plays host to the city's most diverse, multicultural, worldtronica club nite, ATLAS. At 10:45 pm, the cover charge policy was in effect (a very affordable $5), and a decent crowd was lounging on the ample sofas and bar. Music heard was a nice mix of dancehall and UK garage, including a Sean Paul remix.
At 11:00, DJ Anjali was up and opened her set with two records by multicultural Danish-based rap trio Outlandish, Walou and Guantanamo, both in their bhangra remixes, which set the tone for the evening. A Natacha Atlas track followed, after which she launched into a full two-hour bhangra-infused set, an admirable feat, considering the very much underground status of Asian electronica in the US. Heard that night were classics such as Bally Sagoo's remix of Mera Laung Gawacha, and more recent hits such as Sukshinder Shinda feat. MC Cheshire Cat's Gal Sunja. By midnite, the dancefloor was packed with revelers who continued to stream in.
It was a very eclectic and friendly crowd, certainly the most diverse I have seen in Pdx in the 48 hours since I've been there. Among the local djs who were in attendance was DJ Harmony, who gave me the low down on her own Sunday event at Holocene, DIVA.
At 1:00 am, special guest DJ S-Dub (we recognized him from his earlier set that evening) came back on the turntables, spinning world music-infused house: Afro, Brazilian, Caribbean, and Latin. Heard that nite were South African kwaito group Mafikizolo's Lotto, and MAW feat. soca diva Denise Belfon's Work!
At 2, DJ Anjali was back, opening and closing her last hour set with classic Bollywood, and the crowd danced till the lights were turned back on another great world music club nite in Portland.
And, what would a Six Degrees Records-approved club nite be without free cds? You're bound to walk away with music that are sure to be the world music classics of tomorrow.

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, July 20, 2004 - 2:05 PMHello! this is a beautiful post, very incouraging! Michelle and I are trying to get a night going in Miami and at the moment things are at a bit of a stand still (we haven't gotten a date yet). what kind of marketing tactic would you recommend for promoting this kind of night? -
-
Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, July 20, 2004 - 4:07 PMGet a major world music label such as Six Degrees Records to "adopt" you guys, making it a Six Degrees Presents-type of event, that way you guys get listed on the official website (they don't have a Miami nite as yet, watupwidat?). That's how I found out about ATLAS in Pdx.
That will be your single biggest exposure, next step is to use Tribe resources and list your event in the different Music and Miami tribes. After that, if you wanna do grassroots, cross-promotion, pass out flyers at FIU, that's totally up to you guys. :) -

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Wed, July 21, 2004 - 11:26 AMhere in Vancouver (BC) we have a 4 person collective called 'Beats without Borders' (ahem). we do not yet have a regular club night, only because we keep getting booked for other events and summer is a busy time! but we are catching on like wildfire, and will likely start a regular night in the fall.
on august 12th we are co-presenting 'cheb i sabbah' with caravan world rhythms at the Atlantis night club. it's going to be huge... a classical indian raga performance followed by myself (lady ra) and androgynoid of BwB, bellydancers with live percussion, and a tabla maestro who will play with cheb.
in september we are playing the OPUS hotel (super ritzy, yo!) and they are also paying for us to do a mixed cd that they can give to all the guests! as well as paying us well to do the gig.
so i'm pretty damn excited, yes i am :-)
we do have six degrees sponsorship as well, so we are listed there, and get lots of promo stuff to give away, which is cool.
fun fun fun!

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Sat, July 24, 2004 - 4:28 AMA few of us in Helsinki will be starting a club this autumn called CROSS BORDERS. The initiative comes from a promo cd and concert done late last year by local world music bands. We've got good support from the venue but sponsorship from Six Degrees would really pump it up. Thanks for that tip. Anybody there I should contact directly? -

Sun, July 25, 2004 - 2:37 AMJacques, ra, thanks for the support and info; most useful. I also thought it was cool that our club names were so similar. There is a realy great ethno-festival next weekend in south Finland (www.faces.fi) where we plan to pass out some flyers about our launch - nothing specific, just wetting people's appetites. We'll be having live acts as well as djs. If the money starts rolling in, I would definately be into networking with you guys for some trans-atlantic gigs. Cheers! -

Sun, July 25, 2004 - 7:25 AMI just got a chill thinking about the synchronicity of the similar names and the beauty and wonder of a trans-atlantic world music festival- maybe a simulcast web concert?!? Talk about "Without borders!" This is the best of what Tribe is about!!! Best of luck to all of you! -

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, July 27, 2004 - 2:15 PMMiami is coming soon - I'm still working out the kinks also I'm doing promotion for the Earthdance/United Beats of Peace Tour here in Orlando & Miami so it's been really chaotic lately.
Earthdance--The Global Dance Festival For Peace--whose mission is to unite dance and music communities around the world in support of humanitarian, environmental and peace-related causes--has been called “the Dance Aid for the new millenium.” This summer, Earthdance takes its message of “Give Peace a Dance” on the road with its first annual tour, “United Beats Of Peace” (UBoP). The 20-date North American tour, represented by the The Agency Group, launches August 20 in San Francisco with stops in Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, New Orleans and Los Angeles, among others, leading up to the 8th annual Earthdance global gathering on September 18.
UBoP’s diverse line up includes electronica/trance pioneer and leading edge musician and composer BT, whose latest releases include the CD/DVD Music From And Inspired By The Film MONSTER. For the first time in over 4 years, BT will perform with a full band and will be playing music from his most recent studio album Emotional Technology, which featured the hit single “Simply Being Loved.”
Co-headliners will include the ground breaking “funktronic” band Particle, whose debut album Launchpad, was released earlier this year, with an upcoming release of the Launchpad track, remixed by Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay.
Other headliners include groundbreaking Gorillaz co-founder and superstar producer/DJ Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, who will preview his long awaited second album, Handsome Boy Modeling School, due for release this fall on Atlantic Records. Also featured are Earthdance’s own Afro hip-hop collective Chris Berry & Panjea from New York, and producer/remixer DJ Peas. DJ Peas will debut songs from his new album Peas Filters (Domo Records), inspired by the work of ambient-trance pioneer Kitaro, recipient this year of Earthdance’s first annual Artist Of Peace Award.
“In these times of global unrest, it’s more important than ever that artists consciously join together.” says Earthdance founder Chris Deckker. “This tour will be a powerful way to spread the message of peace and global sustainability.”
Integral to the tour is an awareness raising component, featuring speakers, voter registration, “green edge” companies, and local non-profits in each city, with the intention to inspire people to become pro-active in their own communities. UBoP’s “conscious peace caravan” will be charted in an online road diary at www.earthdance.org for the worldwide Earthdance community to join the tour, and to connect with artists backstage and on the bus.
The tour concludes in Los Angeles on September 17th, the day before the 8th annual Earthdance global event on Saturday, September 18th. The 24-hour international celebration is the world’s largest synchronized music and dance event, bringing together people in more than 120 cities and 50 countries. The defining moment of Earthdance is a synchronized link-up when The Prayer for Peace music track is played simultaneously at each event around the world. This shared experience captures the essence of Earthdance and creates a profound moment of deep peace, unity, and global community.

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Thu, August 26, 2004 - 11:28 AMI'm in Singapore this weekend for WOMAD and just got back from the opening party at Bar None for Temple of Sound, one of the headlining acts for this year's WOMAD S'pore.
The venue is the site of the much-missed former Fabrice World Music Bar in the basement of the Marriott (ex-Dynasty hotel). It is my first visit back in the space that used to house THE World Music Club in S.E. Asia; many a night was spent dancing to DJ's mix of Khaled, Bally Sagoo, and other world music hits of the 90s.
In between the live performances was dj on duty, Andrew Chang, who spun a wicked World House set, heavy on the African and Brazilian influences. Heard tonite were Salome de Bahia's rework of Kaoma's (Fugir) Outro Lugar, MAW feat. soca diva Denise Belfon's Work!, Bob Sinclar/Africanism's remix of preeminent Afro-Caribbean Cadence-lypso band Exile One's Viel Ou La. -

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, September 14, 2004 - 3:33 PMWell, Miami is now official!! We were suppose to have our first night September 4th but due to a lovely hurricane we had to cancel - What I find interesting is at first the clubs were not into the idea of doing a night like this and now a few have come back to us and are re-considering. We've also been invited to participate in a couple world music festivals as well. Anything this newbie should be prepared for in this upcoming event besides hurricanes? We've already started doing a lot of promoting at the colleges etc.
EARTHNOIZE, a multi-media insurgence presents:

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, September 14, 2004 - 3:49 PMWow! That sounds like an amazing night! Congratulations!
If you rock it, folks will love you. My best advice is: give them a place to follow up... flyers for your next event, a website, oh, and be sure to get people's emails for a list so you can keep them informed about events. At our CHeb gig we (well, Adrian mostly, brave soul!) actively asked people if they'd give us their emails, but you can have it at the door. But our experience of that is that people spill drinks all over it and sometimes they just go missing.
We also handed out Six Degrees freebies as they were leaving and passed out flyers for TAO, people snapped them up like kids in a cookie jar!
Let us know how it goes!

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, September 14, 2004 - 4:08 PMYup, what Lady Ra said about eventually having one common website for the monthly event/collective :)
And some way for the folks to be on an email mailing list for subsequent events and info. U'll be surprised how you gain a following that way :D -

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Wed, September 15, 2004 - 9:26 AMWe have the web-site ready www.earthnoize.com, great idea about promoting the next night at the current one. We have a close knit group of friends that are musicians, local artists, different dance troupes, writers etc. that work together to cross promote each others events. For instance, several of my friends are performing in the local Earthdance festival down here so we're going to be promoting our night there as well as the bands themselves. Same with an upcoming bellydance festival. I was even flyering the MTV Awards down here @ The Miami Arena promoting our night while they were going on

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Fri, December 17, 2004 - 10:43 AMLast weekend I was in San Francisco and took some time to explore some of the world music/worldtronica club scene there. On Thursday nite, we had wanted to explore one of the popular venues, but to our surprise, found the place quite deserted. A local insider told us that the main dj responsible for the signature event was still out of town. We instead got a suggestion for another event/venue which would have been our second choice, so it worked out perfectly.
That venue was Studio Z and the event was the premiere party for the documentary Short Cut To Nirvana
www.studioz.tv/
melafilms.com/pages/sfparty.html
We'd heard of Studio Z before from previous event listings such as the Dances of Ecstasy screening party and this, the SCTN party had also been listed on Tribe by DJ Amar.
By the time we arrived at the venue, it was midnight, and Cheb I Sabbah was already into his bhangra set. There was also a choreographed dance performance by the Dhol Rhythms dance troupe
www.dholrhythms.com/
Our first impression was a nice, comfortable venue with an eclectic crowd. As we started to move, we sensed the nice hardwood floors, very conducive to dancing! This, even after having spent the day walking thru endless airport terminals.
I've caught Cheb I Sabbah twice on tour this past year, and had a feeling it's a distinct experience when he's playing for the home crowd. He was soon joined onstage by tabla artist Ferhan Qureshi for a dj meets live tabla set, accompanied by a bellydancer. That's when the party kicked into hi gear.
This was the first time I'd seen Ferhan Qureshi's performance and it was awesome. The highpoint was when Cheb dropped Khaled's El-H'mam to Ferhan's furious tabla beats--the meeting of tablas and rai never sounded so good! (Which made me think Khaled needs to have Nitin Sawhney produce more tracks for him a la El Harba Wine from the Kenza album).
The fusion of different world sounds continued much to the delight of the crowded dancefloor. Bhangra dancehall, Asian Massive, Turkish hiphop reverberated thru Studio Z that night. There were the signature tracks from Cheb's playlist such as Hasna and the remix of Mitwa from Lagaan, but there were also the new sounds from Juggy D and Oojami.
Toward the end of the nite, Cheb invited the two filmakers to take their bow onstage. Later, as the crowd filed out of the venue, co-producer/co-director/cinematographer Maurizio Benazzo graciously thanked the guests. All in all, we felt some major positive vibes at this event and it was a great warm-up for our next event, Worldly at 1015 Folsom
www.dhamaalsf.com/mailer/worldly.htm
Arriving at the famous SF club at midnite, we headed straight into the main room where the dancefloor was already rocking to Cheb I Sabbah. And good thing considering only half an hour later, it fully packed with dancing bodies bumper to bumper!
Even tho we'd been to a Cheb show 24 hours prior, this was a totally different experience where bhangrahop and big-room Indotronica ruled the sound sytem. He was joined from across the dancefloor by dhol drummer Mitch Hyare and the sonic result of dj beats and live dhol was pure heaven! Not to mention hearing and dancing to Marsoul Il Hob in a mega club setting for us was worth the price of admission alone! :D
Many a time we have wondered how world beat/worldtronica would sound in a huge club, as opposed to the typical resto-bar-lounge, smaller-type venues it is normally relegated to. Well this was it, and kudos to the promoters for putting the "Asian" into this "Massive" event.
Note that 1015 Folsom has multiple rooms, both upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs was the live lounge where the live acoustic set was going on with Sukhawat Ali Khan and Riffat Sultana
www.riffatsultana.com/
We did check it out, albeit belatedly, and found it to be the perfect chilled-out sanctuary from the other rooms. There were ample ottomans for lounging and appreciating the wonderful traditional sounds of the Northern Indian subcontinent.
Back on the main floor, at 12:45 am, Cheb was joined onstage by DJ Janaka and special guest Karsh Kale. At 1:15 Karsh took over the decks for a brief one-hour set, but what a magnificent one it was! A thrilling roller-coaster sonic ride thru trippy tablatronica and uptempo ethnotrance. The crowd on the floor had loosened up somewhat, but by the time he dropped Ryukyu Underground, it had filled up to capacity again. Since this was the first time I'd heard a Karsh Kale dj set, it was definately a bonus for what was proving to be a wonderful weekend exploring world beats in the Bay Area.
At 2:15, Janaka came on and started off his set with ragga jungle, dub, and drum n bass. He was joined by two MCs doing a live PA with two contrasting styles. I'd heard a lot about the Dhamaal sound, mainly thru reviews and a dj set they did on BBC UK. It was evident they have an underground following in the Bay Area judging by the dancing crowd in the main room. The second hour of Janaka's set saw more dnb infused with the Worldly sounds of dhol, tumbi, and even bossa.
At 4:15 the main room events were concluded, and the crowd moved to the front room where DJs Amar and Ameet were still spinning Eastern breaks and Indo-Arabo-Turkish house. There was also a basement room that was playing commercial trance.
All in all, it was a great night--three djs in the main room, each a major worldtronica artist in his own right, and each with a remarkedly distinct dj style. Fantastic! And considering this is only the first of what the promoters promise to be a series of regular world music-themed events in a mega club setting, fans in the Bay Area have a lot to look forward to in the new year.
On Saturday, our last nite in SF, we decided to explore a smaller venue for some salsa dancing. It was El Rincon, a Mexican restaurant and club that used to be Ganesh Indian restaurant and world beat club. The band was Quimbombo, one of the Bay Area's newer salsa bands
www.oyeproductions.com/bio/quimbombo.htm
Arriving at midnite, our first impression was of stepping on to a party scene straight out of the movie Wild Orchid :D It was a smallish venue with a decent crowd. The band was very good--Cuban vocalists and one mean bass player! There were Brazilian flags draped all around, traces of the Brazilian nite they host on Fridays. Recognizing that it was a newer venue (since the changeover) and relatively new band, we're putting this down on the books to check out again the next time we're in town.
So that was it--60 hours in San Francisco, two Cheb I Sabbah events (a must!), and the pure pleasure of seeing Dhamaal Soundsystem--djs and live musicians take over 1015 Folsom! :D And the great thing--there's even more world beat venues we didn't get to cover like El Rio in the Mission and other Latino clubs which we're saving for the next trip.
Hope this makes you wanna go out in your own city and check out some of the fine artists and djs playing world music-themed events in your locality :) -

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Fri, December 17, 2004 - 11:28 AMGreat post, Jacques! Oh, how I wish I could have experienced that. Our venue for Cross Borders lacks a lot compared to your descriptions of what went down in the Bay Area but Helsinki just doesn't have the numbers to support that kind of event....Not yet, anyway. But we do what we can, and just getting a picture in my mind of that kind of event (1015 Folsom) will make our club better. Keep on getting around! -

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Sat, December 18, 2004 - 4:57 AMI just got home from a big Bhangra party put on by A Town (atownpresents.com) here in Vancouver, where I was a guest DJ. DJ Reminisce rocked HARD. There was a dhol player, too, the same one who did the Cheb show with us.
I dropped a couple of tracks that made the Kings of Lower Mainland BC drool... good to know a Pardesi can keep up! Whoo hoo!
Bhangra parties are so much fun!
But yeah, Jacques, WHY didn't I jump on a plane and come join you? Cuz we're gonna do it again come summer? -

Sat, December 18, 2004 - 8:49 AMHi Layla. Did you happen to catch Esma Redzepova (Queen of Gypsy Song)'s concert in Eugene back in October?
When you're in Portland, don't forget to check out ATLAS world beats/bhangra/bollywood party every first and third Saturdays at Holocene

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Sun, December 19, 2004 - 11:47 PMI didn't catch it, but I do have to admit, Eugene gets some pretty good music, just not really of the electronic vareity which is really my favorite stuff. There are a couple events comming up though and I will be playing at each, doing some downtempo world beats...
yay! -

Tue, December 21, 2004 - 6:33 PMHey Jacques - I missed you on the night @ Worldly!
Thanks for the great write up!
For 'Worldly: An Asian Massive Takeover' at 1015 Folsom 1300 people come out to see one of the largest such shows in the US.
Big respect and gratitude to all the incredible artists and event sponsor! THANK YOU for making this such a successful night! Esprcially Jacques who flew in for the performance!
PS We did a technical hitch - the mixer in the main room blow a fuse during Chebi's set so we were unable to get the live tabla going for the Dhamaal set :( In fact we managed to get the MC connect half way through the set :) Get got through ok though.

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, December 21, 2004 - 6:39 PMThat's what I was wondering about, coz the flyer mentioned both MC Colonel & Tabla to accompany ur set. There were two MCs tho, one in white and the other in red. Which one is Colonel and who's the other one? -
-
Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Fri, December 24, 2004 - 10:28 AMThe Colonel was the American guy and Samba the Sengelese. Samba actual raps in Fulani (Nigerian dialect). The tabla woul have added a lot but alas - tech issues :( -

Fri, December 24, 2004 - 11:01 AMThanks for the info Janaka! So that was Samba Guisse in the white--very interesting and unique mc style. I knew it wasn't Jamaican or any of the Caribbean styles, altho his vocals kinda reminded me of younger soca artists like Kevin Lyttle.
MC Colonel was awesome.
Btw, I was finally able to order a copy of the eponymous Dhamaal Soundsystem release thru my fave music retailer. Keep us posted on upcoming events/releases!

Re: Worldly IV
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 2:08 PMTen months after the premiere of Worldly I, an event which I had the good fortune to attend and write up here on tribe, WORLDLY, Dhamaal Soundsystem’s signature mega club event in San Francisco, bringing together many different artists, performers, and djs in today’s world music and electronica fusion scene from all over North America and both sides of the Atlantic, is now in its fourth edition. On this occasion, the stars have it in again for this world music traveler to visit the City by the Bay and check out 1015 Folsom on the night of Worldly IV.
www.dhamaalsf.com/mailer/su...dly_1.html
This time, I am very blessed to be joined by a worldlybeatgoddess, DJ Lady Ra of the Beats Without Borders collective, Vancouver, BC, and also a member of the World Music Tribe. Arriving at the club around 10:30, we got there in time to see DJ Amar spin bhangra for the dance lesson led by Vicki Virk of the Dhol Rhythms dance troupe. It was great to see everybody learning to dance this fun, social dance that accompanies a major world beat rhythm that is bhangra. DJ Amar’s selections made sure that our feet were tapping and shoulders moving in the packed front room of 1015 Folsom.
www.dholrhythms.com/index.php
bansuri.net/solunamar/djamar.html
At 11 pm, DJ Soulsalaam took over the decks in the Front Room, designated the World Breaks Room that nite, and promptly served up a blockrockin mix of dancehall, hiphop, and electronic beats. I was very glad to finally be able to hear this amazing dj live, having missed out on several chances to see him (last year on the eve of Worldly I while he was in Brazil, and just the previous nite during the inaugural of his new club nite, Passport, featuring Janaka Selekta of Dhamaal). We heard him drop many a krazy tune including the dancehall remix of the Chemical Brothers Moroccan sample-laden Galvanize and David Starfire’s Loaded.
www.soulsalaam.com/
At 11:30, the doors to the main room opened to the sweet sounds of bhangra courtesy of DJ Cheb I Sabbah accompanied by a live performance from the Dhol Rhythms troupe. It is always a pleasure to hear worldbeat played in a megaclub setting such as 1015 Folsom. I vividly recall the pure ecstasy and joy of hearing Chebiji spin my faves Marsoul Il Hob and Mitwa during Worldly I.
Nine months later, the playlist had naturally changed, but was still undeniably, intoxicatingly, groovilicious with tracks from the likes of Cheikha Rimitti (Rimitti Riddim), 113 & Magic System feat. Mohamed Lamine (Un Gaou A Oran in a zouglou meets rap and rai mashup!), and DJ APS feat Mohammed Siddiq and Ranjit Kaur’s bhangra anthem, Tabba. And, of course, there were the remixes from La Kahena, including an outstanding bhangra remix of Toura Toura. The dancefloor filled up in no time at all. When Cheb I dropped Un Gaou A Oran, the guy with the blond curls dancing next to me pulled his hair up into a knot—he knew the BEAT was about to hit, ohh yeaaahhhhh!!! :D
www.chebisabbah.com/
At 12:30 am, the first of the MIDIval PunditZ, Gaurav Raina, took over the decks and what ensued for the next hour was the most amazing mix of progressive Asian dance music that was equally at home in Delhi as it was in San Fran that nite, just as it would be in either London or Miami. The genius of the PunditZ in combining their North Indian musical heritage with contemporary electronica and clubsounds can be witnessed from the response on the dancefloor which was packed to capacity with a sea of bodies of every color, shape, and size dancing bumper to bumper. We saw many a face from Tribe, including World Music :)
We also heard many a track and remix from the current album, including Raanjhan (with the Abida Parveen samples) and not one, but two remixes of Ali (featuring the divine vox of Kailash Kher)—the first, a tribal-tech remix, and the second, a dubbed-out, tranced-out, progressive version. Halfway thru Gaurav’s set, the multiracial group of street and breakdancers known as the Urban Momentum Allstars took over the main dance stage and delighted the crowd with their nifty moves.
Lady Ra, who had been checking out Dhamaal co-founder Maneesh the Twista’s dj set in the World Breaks Room, came back to report that breakdancing had also spontaneously broken out in the front room. In the main room, it was quite a sight to behold both Karsh Kale and Cheb I Sabbah dancing behind Gaurav in the dj booth—here they were, the key players of the Asian Massive tour, reunited on Dhamaal’s Worldly stage. As if to emphasize the sense of place, there was a glowing lantern hanging above the dj booth depicting the globe in lieu of the typical disco ball—this sure ain’t you average nite at the disco!
At 1:30 am, the second of the PunditZ, Tapan Raj, took over the mixing duties, and proceeded to drive the crowd mad with a true MIDIval PunditZ classic, Bhangra Fever! With an eclectic style that spanned jungle breakbeats to Asian drum n bass (including my personal fave, the Mitwa remix from Lagaan), the PunditZ, hailing from Delhi, showed us that India is definitely emerging as a center of world electronica and dance music. They even have their own club nite in Delhi as part of Cyber Mehfil which is on this world music traveler’s list of worldwide world music club nites to check out.
www.punditz.com/
Lady Ra came back from the Shabaz Live Lounge glowing with enthusiasm about the dj set from Motion Potion who was rocking the upstairs room. By the time we got back there, he was transitioning from an Afro-tribal House classic track to a bhangra set, which included the song Apna Punjab. It was a slightly different crowd upstairs, more chill and laidback, but definitely with its own share dancers who love to groove to a good beat, bhangra or otherwise.
www.motionpotion.com/
Back downstairs, Derek Beres was spinning in the World Breaks Room with his eclectic mix of Balkan beats, Afro- and Brazilian House which reflects the worldly sounds of that East Coast melting pot, NYC, and the home of his collective, GlobeSonic. We were instantly transported to Asia Minor with Siki Siki Baba and back to NYC with Dennis Ferrer’s Afro-house classic Funu.
www.globesonic.com/bio_derek.htm
www.globalbeatfusion.com/
Meanwhile, Karsh Kale was rocking the main room with the lush and atmospheric soundscapes of tablatronica big beats and breaks. When he played Nitin Sawhney feat. Ojos De Brujo’s Noche De Vela Pt. 2 (album cut no less! why oh why has nobody done an extended remix of this gorgeously sensual uptempo world fusion track?), we could not help but be engulfed by the pasion flamenca into a dancing frenzy! During the Ming & FS remix of Saajana, MC Colonel came on the mic signaling the transition to Janaka Selekta’s set.
www.karshkale.com/
Janaka Selekta took over as the last dj to headline the main room of Worldly IV and how appropriately so for this visionary co-founder and event organizer of the Dhamaal collective. He was accompanied by MC Colonel who delivered a fiery rap over his dj’s beatz. Janaka opened his set with that rare white label drum n bass A. R. Rahman Zubeida remix featuring the divine vocals of Lata Mangeshkar, progressing thru all the signature Dhamaal sounds, and on to a phenomenal beat and bass remix of Im Ninalou by Cheb I Sabbah feat. Michal Cohen.
When I first heard the illustrious list, a who’s-who of world electronica fusion scene signed up to remix tracks from La Kahena--Makyo, Bill Laswell, Neil Sparkes/Temple of Sound, et al--I thought, of all of them, Janaka Selekta would be the best choice to remix Im Ninalou to which he gave an edgier sound while retaining Michal Cohen’s unique vocals singing the lyrics of 17th century Jewish mystic Shalom Shabazi
Im ninalou dalte nadivim dalte marom lo ninalou
El hai maromam al karouvim kolam barouchou yaalou
Im ninalou dalte nadivim dalte marom lo ninalou
El hai maromam al karouvim kolam barouchou yaalou
www.dhamaalsf.com/v1/index.html
Over the course of the nite, we also ran into other luminaries of the Dhamaal collective, including creative visual artist NYoMI and the amazing VJ, El Diablo.
Just as Janaka was closing out the nite of Worldly IV in the main room, DJ Amar was closing the World Breaks Room with his eclectic set of Indotronica, electro tango, and hiphop flamenkillo. It was a very elegant set, with the bpms flowing fluidly in tune with the dancers, reminiscent of the style of Claude Challe. All in all, it was the perfect way to end a legendary world music club nite that is Dhamaal’s WORLDLY IV in SF.

Re: WORLDLY V
Thu, March 30, 2006 - 8:18 AMMy third time at Worldly, presently in its fifth incarnation, fast becoming one of the premier showcases for World Music, World Beat, World Fusion, and South Asian Electronica www.dhamaalsf.com/Worldly/w...ly2006.htm The crowning event of the annual Dhamaal Sights & Sounds Festival, currently in its third year, Worldly V promised to be the biggest one ever, double-billed as the release party for Karsh Kale's Broken English www.karshkale.com/, and bringing in worldtronica collectives from as far as Vancouer, BC with 3/4 of Beats Without Borders www.beatswithoutborders.com/ and Chicago, IL with Radiohiro www.radiohiro.com/
Arriving by cab in the pouring rain (already a record for the Bay Area), I was greeted by the familiar sight of Dhamaal Soundsystem cofounder Maneesh The Twister www.myspace.com/maneeshthetwister working the doors at SF megaclub 1015 Folsom. It has been one and a half years since I attended Worldly I which acquainted with the Dhamaal collective and their artistic, music, and event productions, and my respect has grown for these people who implement the diy approach in everything they do--I remember at the conclusion of Worldly I watching Janaka and NYoMi haul out their own decorative rugs and drapery in the early hours of the am!
Entering the club at 11 pm, I could see that a sizable crowd was alreading gathering in the front/World Breaks room where Beats Without Borders DJs Lady Ra and Tarun were getting ready to spin their tagteam set. Lady Ra truly puts the WORLD music in WORLDLY by spinning an eclectic and diverse set around the theme of Afro-Arabic music. She started off with a traditional-sounding Turkish number from Masala Soundsystem progressing to more electronic sounds, a sonic journey along the North and Eastern African coast, with tunes such as Mon Bled by Rohff, Mohamed Lamine, & Chebba Maria, Rimitti Riddim featuring the otherworldly chants of the grand diva of rai herself, Cheikha Rimitti, and Aiwa, the beatlicious peace duet by Sudanese musicians Emmanuel Jal and Abdel Gadir Salim. The floor was filled to da max by 11:20 pm with ecstatic dancers groovin to the Arabic beat!
After, Tarun Nayar took over the dj booth and wowed the crowd with live tablatronica, taking the crowd deeper into a night of amazing world music and electronica fusion. I have had the pleasure in the past of enjoying both acoustic, tablatronic, and dj sets from this extremely multitalented Vancouver, BC-based artist and musician who frequently sojourns in India to further hone in his musical skills. I asked him when we can look forward to new original tablatronic music from him and he said to expect them sometime by the end of the year.
Meanwhile at around midnite, the main room was starting to open with what promised to be a series of amazing dance performances with many of the dance troupes that have come to perform at Worldly their choreographed sets to world beatz and electronica fusion. Up first was Clandestine, with its members dressed beautifully in black, doing a routine to world fusion music. Up at the dj booth we could see maverick Bay Area-based DJ Amar www.bansuri.net/solunamar/djamar.html and the incredible DJ Layla www.djlayla.com/ (who had come in with her husband all the way from Eugene, OR!) doing double duties on the mic, introducing the fine ladies of the various dance troupes, and mixing their music live. After Clandestine, came a solo bellydancer, Haven, accompanied by Soozhyq on doumbek. For them, DJ Amar spun a live mix that started with the intro from the MIDIval PunditZ' Raanjhan featuring the sublime vocals of Abida Parveen, and morphing into Dark Tabla by Kaya Project and seguing into another fusion number, which Miss Bliss (of Beats Without Borders who was dancing next to me) correctly identified as one of Adam Shaikh's. Haven's dance and Soozhyq's doumbek beats moved flawlessly along with the dj set, creating one of the many memorable moments of the evening.
After Clandestine and Haven with Soozhyq, there were two more dance troupes including the high-energy bhangra performance by the ladies of Dholrhythms www.dholrhythms.com/ starting off by dancing to the bhangra-dancehall/diwaliriddim stylings of RDB with Elephant Man's Ishq Naag which got the crowd all revved up for the night! Last, but not least, Boom Boom Bollywood of Arizona www.boomboombollywood.com/ with a flawless set of numbers inspired by Bollywood films and music including Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se and Kajra Re from Bunty Aur Babli.
Now, what would a WORLDLY nite on the main floor of 1015 Folsom be without the ritual blessing and gracing of the dj decks by none other than San Francisco's finest, DJ Cheb i Sabbah? www.chebisabbah.com/ As in the past Worldly events that this world music sojourner has attended, the living legend opened the first dj set on the main floor at half past midnite with a full-on bhangra set accompanied on live dhol by champion dhol master Mitch Hyare. AAJ BHANGRA PONIYEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The main floor of 1015 has never rocked so hard as the ecstatic crowds rushed to fill it up and dance this most joyous dance of the Punjab! The dhols banged harder and harder as Mitch Hyare performed to Chebiji's flawless set of bhangra favorites, mixing some classic bhangrahop and newer tunes such as Say Na Say Na by Aneela from the Bluffmaster OST, and also including fusion numbers such as Sandeep Kumar's marvelous gnaoua-meets-bhangra reworking of Cheb i's Toura Toura off the La Kahena album, and the sublimely gorgeous ethotrance of Gaudi's Sufani with the sufi chants.
At about 12:45 am, Karsh Kale took over the decks in the main room, opening with two tracks from the brand new masterpiece album, Broken English sixdegreesrecords.com/artists.php namely the yossi fine remix of Manifest and Rise Up (this fan's personal fave). He then progressed to an hourlong set of ethnotrance, before moving on to the live stage on the other side of the main floor for an acoustic tabla set. The audience was mesmerized by the performance of this US-based master tabla and tablatronica artist, yet another memorable world music moment created at Dhamaal's Worldly! ~*~
Following KK's performance, MC Samba of the Dhamaal collective was up on the live stage, signaling the transition to a dj set by Dhamaal cofounder Janaka Selekta in the main room. This marks my second time witnessing a live pa by MC Samba accompanying his dj Janaka (the first time was at Worldly I) and I must say I am increasing impressed by the vocal quality and finesse of this Senegalese artist. Effortlessly rapping in his own unique style, a wonderful mix of Fulani often laced with some Caribbean flava, make the perfect accompaniment to Janaka's ragga-tinged breakbeatz.
At 3 am (time sure does pass when ur having this much fun! :D), it was back to the World Breaks room for an encore set by the Beats Without Borders djs Tarun and Lady Ra. Tarun went up first this time, opening with some uptempo tunes, including the Kaya Project remix of Irina Mikhailova's Salaam, before bringing the tempo down a notch by transitioning into reggae tracks. Lady Ra followed up with more ragga r n b, closing out the front room of 1015 Folsom at 4 am. Meanwhile, from outside the main room, we could hear Maneesh the Twister closing out the main room with signature Dhamaaltastic sounds including a wikkid breakbeat remix of Chura Liya.
By the time we hit the pavement outside 1015 Folsom, it was 5 am. So many incredible world music, world beat, and wordtronica artists, djs, and performers--hard to believe it all went down in one night! For this world music traveler, it is the best Worldly yet and looking forward to many more to come. Equally amazing as the music is the opportunity to meet and partay with fellow world music tribesters which includes fans as well as artists--what a way to ring in the spring of World Music 2006! :D
The next nite saw us at Amnesia in the Mission district for a live pa by the MC Rai band www.mcrai.com/ including prolific SF/Bay Area world musician and producer Jef Stott www.jefstott.com/ Every inch of space was packed with a very diverse crowd that came out to enjoy a live performance by this group of very talented musicians supporting a rai artist based right here in the US! MC Rai's vocals were in top form as he sang selections from the Raivolution album www.embarkarecords.com/ The floor got so packed we could barely move our arms 'bout! :P The MC Rai band is currently on tour in North America. It was an hourlong performance that ended at half past one--as we left, we could hear DJ Special Agent K of Six Degrees Records www.sixdegreesrecords.com taking over the vinyl decks at Amnesia and opening with the Bassnectar remix of Cheb i Sabbah feat. Khadija Othmani's Alkher Illa Doffor.
As a postcript to 48 hours of World Music Clubbing in San Francisco in the early spring of 2006, we also had a chance to visit with SF-based producer and dj Ra www.sanyama.com and previewed for us some upcoming tracks including an amazing remix of Manish Vyas and other soniclicious ethnic-influenced trance tracks. Mahalo nui, Ra!

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, May 10, 2005 - 11:53 AMIn Seattle since the weekend and this city is brimming with world music-themed club nites
Went to Tandav, recently designated a Six Degrees Records Night/event, on Saturday in the Fremont district.
www.funketabla.com/
We arrived at a little before midnite and the dancefloor was packed and rocking to DJ James Whetzel spinning a bhangra fusion classic--Bally Sagoo & Hans Raj Hans' Aja Nachle. Soon thereafter DJ Deepayan Acharjya took over the decks spinning a bhangra-hop set. Tandav is a unique club experience in that there are three djs with two of them taking turns at various live instruments and improvisation. James Whetzel performed on the sarod and darbouka, as well as engaged in some throat singing. Deepayan Acharjya performs on both tabla and dhol. They alternate dj sets every half hour with the third dj, Gringo Starr spinning Brazilian and Latin-flavored house on vinyl. The last half-hour of the nite (which ended at 2 am) saw Deepayan opening the set with a Tarkan double-hitter Dudu and Simarik, as well as some Arabic shaabi and fusion music. The last track of the night, fittingly, was Rachid Taha's Rock El Casbah.
Monday nite was reserved for I Heart Shiva--the longest running Asian/bhangra/world music at the gorgeous venue that is the Baltic Room
www.balticroom.com/
At a quarter past midnite, the sounds of bhangra and bass could be heard from the club's entrance and the dancefloor was at its peak. DJ Peter Madril spun a flawless mix of bhangra-hop which included Desi standards such as the Mentor remix of Timbaland & Magoo's Cop That Sh*t. DJ Nasser, the resident dj for The Fusion nites, took over briefly for an Arabic mini-set that included some Kuwaiti Miami Group and Hakim's El Salam and Wala Wala. For the last hour, Peter Madril was back on the decks with an eclectic mix of world music. The revelers went from doing the balle balle to the perreo when Madril dropped Daddy Yankee's Gasolina, the #1 reggaeton track of the moment! Classics such as Alabina's Baila Maria blended seamlessly into the sounds of the Asian Underground that kept the dancers happy until the lights came up on a legendary world music club nite in Seattle. -

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Tue, May 10, 2005 - 1:10 PMThank you, Peter, for spinning the music that makes for an interesting nite on the town in your beautiful city for us world music fans! Too bad I won't be here for the Bollywood anniversary nite--my cousins (who outnumber me) are dragging me elsewhere on the west coast. Will be back in the future to check out more I Heart Shiva and other Seattle-area world music events. I know I've already missed a couple this past weekend--Worldwide @ Nectar (practically next door to Tandav @ Tost) and the Desi party at the Mirabeau.
Seattle really looks like the world music hotspot in the PNW, with collectives like I Heart Shiva leading the way. Coincidentally, both I Heart Shiva and Tandav have online communities on Tribe, so do check them out for more 411. -

why, as a matter of fact... ;)
I throw a weekly event called Afro Funke' (Thursdays at the Zanzibar in Santa Monica). It started 2 years ago as mainly an Afrobeat night, but it now has dug deeper into the roots of all rhythms around the world, and MAAAAAAN, PEOPLE COME AND GET DOWN!
We've had a lot of great guest DJs, and almost always have some live players sitting in with my set. We've even had the honor of having Zap Mama and Stevie Wonder sitting in with my DJ sets! as well as Derf Reklaw, Carol C (SiSe'), Satnam Ramgotra on tablas, Boujou Sissoko on Kora, Capoeira Rodas, Bellydancers, fire dancers, traditional Samba dance performance with Batucada troupes, Alan Lightner on pan drums, Todd Simon on Trumpet (the madman from Antibalas, Sharon Jones, Macy Gray, Quantic, Yesterdays New Quintet......), Sheila Govindarajan on vocals (an absolutely amazing singer like no other!), Ghana's Rocky Dawuni live and many many more...
there is truly a down-to-earth, and beautiful energy in the room every week, and sometime an event d'void of ego is hard to find in LA, so I do hope you will come join with us. :)

Anup (Tandav - SEA) is regular at the Baltic Room and a frequent presence at See Sound Lounge and Nectar. Spinning everything from techno to hip-hop to Bollywood beats, Anup creates a moving collage that's as mesmerizing as it is danceable. He even taps out additional rhythms on a drum pad when the mood strikes him. It's nearly impossible to listen to DJ Anup without moving to his beats; even the man himself gives in to the music sometimes. He really enjoys what he's doing, and that makes all the difference.

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 6:50 PMIn Vancouver, BC this week, and went to check out Beats Without Borders, the premiere world music club nite in the area.
www.beatswithoutborders.com/
The monthly event is held at Club Atlantis in Yaletown, in the proximity of downtown Vancouver. Our first impression of the venue was that it was very similar in setup to Studio Z in San Francisco with its modern, clean interior, and hardwood floors, albeit with twice the crowd capacity. It was also slightly in the vein of a more upscale nightclub.
Arriving at 11:00 pm, the dancefloor was already packed and DJ Nils was finishing his set to make way for a live tabla performance by Tarun Nayar who had just returned from India after participating in the Nad Project www.taruntablas.com/nadproject/ A quick glance thru revealed a sizable crowd--a chill group of folks that was quite eclectic and diverse, mirroring the socio-cultural makeup of Vancouver.
We experienced firsthand how Beats Without Borders is a unique world music club experience, combining djs, live musicians, and art, when the crowd in front of the stage suddenly sat down on the floor to take in Tarun's superior tabla skills combined with an impromptu lecture on the basic beats of the instrument. He was then joined by a dancer on stage, a flutist, and electronic beats from the decks rounded up his live tabla session before launching into a dj set and opening with the Freeform Five remix of Nitin Sawhney's Homelands, followed by Noche En Vela, Sawhney's collaboration with Ojos De Brujo from the hot new Philtre album. It was a brief, half-hour excursion into the Asian Underground that Tarun took us, which ended with the Mausam track, also from Sawhney's Philtre album.
By this time, the dancefloor was filled to capacity when DJ Adrian took over the decks, opening with a worldtronica classic, Bhangra Fever by the MIDIval PunditZ. Adrian's set was a flawless mix of South Asian drum n bass, including another PunditZ track, Aaja Re (featuring the Lata Mangeshkar sample from the original version of Noorie), that was tempered by a couple of bhangra 2-step numbers.
True to the saying that time flies when you're having fun, before we knew it, another hour had passed, and with the energy on the dancefloor still pulsating, DJ Lady Ra came on at 12:50 am. Her set was a diverse mix of world fusion sounds, combining elements of Middle Eastern and polyrhythmic Afro-Latin beats that married elements of the organic with the electronic. There was also a nod to Vancouver's sizable South Asian community with a Punjabi folk track that was relished by the dancers.
When the lights came up at 1:30 am, one has the feeling of having enjoyed one of the better music and club experiences in Van city. Beats Without Borders is also an officially designated Six Degrees club nite with many interesting special guests and events to be expected in the future. -

World Music Club Nites In the BAY AREA
Sat, May 28, 2005 - 11:57 PMGreetings all,
I recently went to a Cheb I Sabbah event and, unfortunately, it really lacked some of the "roots" type world music that myself and my friends love to groove to. I know there are Chebi lovers here, and he *used to* spin some great stuff, but times "they are a changin." All respect to him and what he has fostered, though.
So, onward and forward, besides the Cheb I events on Thurs in the City, does anyone know of anywhere else in the Bay area that spins real "roots" type world music - I mean the kind of grooves where you *know* and *feel* what country the song comes from, nez pa?
I really would love to shake my hiney to some really *class* world music.
Thanks for listening! -

I myself haven't been, but have been meaning to check it out for some time. My problem is that everytime I'm in SF, I typically already have an event for Fri nite. I guess I gotta plan on staying over two Fridays next time :) -

Labyrinth featuring Talvin Singh (DJ-set)
Sun, April 16, 2006 - 10:30 AMmade last minute still going straight from work to Amsterdam to meet up there with few friends and going all 2gether to Labyrinth night in Paradiso venue.
After much delay from the early night gig of Trijntje Oosterhuis there was queue a big line at the entrance to enter when Trijntjes gig finished.
Headliner of this night was a dj-set of Talvin Singh along with resident DJ Yakuze from Orient Expressions. After we enter the venue finally after midnight it took still a while to rebuilt the stage for the dj and putting the video screen for the VJ Nomo who had a amazing mashup of visuals.
1.30am finally Talvin enter the stage to take a look to the crowd and after a short while he start dj-ing. He parted up his dj-set in 3 parts; asian underground / drum 'n' bass, elektro / house and a mixed up set of drum n bass, house, bhange and classical music.
in his asian underground / drum 'n' bass set he played much songs from Anokha and Nasha Eastern Drum n Breaks 2 compilations. Between the songs much gaps of silence.
After 40 minutes he starts playing mainly elektro and house what was sounding already much beter without any gaps between the songs, was sounding much beter than the drum n bass / Asian Underground he played before.
Last part was a mash up of everything from drum n bass to classical music and from asian underground to bhanga music, this was also not very special and cut the some songs in the middle of it while all the crowd was dancing, playing 3 times the same song in ONE hour and playing too experimental music for this kind of event.

Re: Labyrinth featuring DJ Yakuza
Tue, April 18, 2006 - 4:19 AMYakuza was also big suprise for me see him dj'ing, knew only music before from his band Orient Expressions.

Re: ATLAS 2-Year Anniversary with special guest, State of Bengal
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 7:55 PMI started this thread a year and a half ago as a way to spotlight world music-themed club nites in different localities with the first review being that of ATLAS--international beats with djs Anjali, The Incredible Kid, and E3 at Holocene, Portland, OR. Last November, I had the distinct pleasure of attending the two-year anniversary of ATLAS with the resident djs and special guest dj, Sam Zaman/State of Bengal.
www.anjaliandthekid.com/
www.stateofbengal.com/
Arriving at club Holocene, I noticed it had been somewhat remodeled since my last visit in July 04. The massive warehouse-style dancefloor was now divided into two sections by a wall, giving the space more of a structure, with an outside lounge/dancefloor, and a larger room with dancefloor and stage behind the wall. DJ The Incredible Kid was already spinning at 10:20 pm with a nice crowd dancing in the lounge/bar area. The music is irresistible from the get go--Arabic hiphop, bhangra and bollywood fusion, and baile funk with tunes like RDB feat. Elephant Man's Ishq Naag and M.I.A.'s Bucky Done Gun. The other resident djs followed including E3 who delved deeper into the fusion of hiphop and world music, including classics such as Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañón's duet with Egyptian singer Hakim's Ah Ya Albi (with rap by Kemo), and Anjali with a flawless set of bhangra and Asian Underground. Special guest State of Bengal came on after the residents with a stunning two-hour set of Asian-influenced drum n bass, complete with special effects that gave a cinematic feel to the dancefloor experience. E3 closed out the anniversary party night with a smooth blend of reggae and classics, including Amr Diab's Habibi, that had the last few revelers dance until the turntable was unplugged at 3:30 am.
Besides the stellar quality of the music and expertise of the djs, I was also struck and impressed by the crowd who showed up to dance to some of the most eclectic, global grooves. It goes to show that no matter where one is, there is a demographic that enjoys worldbeat/worldtronica in a club setting, and props go to the organizers, promoters, and djs for bringing the music to the public. It may be a different city and a different crowd, but the beats are essentially the same, coming from the world to your own city and to a club near you. -

Re: ATLAS 2-Year Anniversary with special guest, State of Bengal
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 8:33 AMWow Jacques! It's been over a year for EarthNoize - I didn't even realize this until now. It's been an amazing blur for me because I'm doing something that I really enjoy doing (turning people onto new music more specifically world music).
"Besides the stellar quality of the music and expertise of the djs, I was also struck and impressed by the crowd who showed up to dance to some of the most eclectic, global grooves." - It's quite entertaining to see what types of people show up for the events. I do mine in a restaurant type of venue (which is tough) but I tend to enjoy this one more than the night in Sobe @ the hotel because the people are very excited about hearing new stuff and are more dedicated to supporting you.

Re: EarthNoize Groove Collective in Miami/South Florida
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 1:27 PMCongrats, Micsto! I was very fortunate to have you preview the venue for the Six Degrees Nite at Alla Turca when I was in the Miami area last May. Kudos for keeping the world music vibes alive in South Florida!
The Miami area is a major music market, but it does present some interesting challenges for world music. There is already a strong affinity for Latin music--Brazilian and other South American/Caribbean genres have no problem getting exposure in South Florida, and the SoBe scene is pretty much saturated with electronica, albeit mostly mainstream house and trance genres which seem to gain favor with clubgoers.
Which is why when world fusion artists such as REG Project put out a world-inflected house record or Novalima releases percussion-heavy, housified Afro-Latin tunes, they are still trying to bridge the gap between mainstream club sounds and global/worldbeat-influenced music. Walking down the 17 blocks of SoBe during WMC, one may easily be led to think that tribal house rules the soundsystems of Miami, but one can also walk into the Tides hotel, for example, and hear soulful Brazilian diva Virginia Rodrigues in the lobby and then find a selection of her cds, as well as other worldtronica standards such as Sidestepper or the Quango Record releases in the guestrooms.
Being a major music market, Miami also shows tremendous potential since people are generally more open to new, international and world music. The question is the best way to present and promote world music/beat/fusion and build a core audience which EarthNoize has successfully done over the past year. World music in a club setting has traditionally been relegated to smaller, resto-club-lounge settings and hotel lobbies, but consistently good vibes and the right ambiance/venue will typically result in word of mouth with more people joining the flock of worldbeat fans/clubbers.

Fri, January 27, 2006 - 1:10 AMJacques, you're too kind. My own self-criticism keeps me from ever seeing our performances that glowingly. We're still growing the night after all this time and really appreciate the support. Glad you had a good time.

Re: World Music Club Nites In Your Area
Mon, June 26, 2006 - 3:05 PMwas last weekend going to Paradiso venue in Amsterdam seeing DJ Yakuza (again, he is resident from the great Labyrinth nights), Pressure Drop SoundSystem, DJogi and DJ Mutamassik.
The night was really amazing because the various different beats and beeps starting and ending with DJ Yakuza in the main room, Yakuza played again a great set from house and breaks mixed with arabic and asian flavours. Headliner in the main room was Brightons reggea and dub soundsystem Pressure Drop who i'm know mainly from thier remixes from the Select Cuts from Blood And Fire compilations and the remixes they done for Leftfield.
Thier set was a mix of reggae and dub with different kind of beats from jungle, house to rave music. The soundsystem included 2 mc's who gave the music an extra nice imput.
In the small (upstairs) room was DJogi and DJ Mutamassik playing, start and ending there was DJogi from Rotterdam. DJogi are orginally Naem and Ravi. Ravi wasnt there that evening, so Naem did everything on his own. Naem comes orginally from the b-boy scene and thats really good to hear in his set with all the scrathes and breaks. Was really suprised about DJ Mutamassik set because i'm didnt know from her before and read only about her. She mixed some class arabic tracks with beats.
concluding with this that Amsterdam have again a great nite for some good world music with Labyrinth.
